The hometown (city) of Maus and his family. Stroll down Korzo, a promenade through the heart of the city, and enjoy great cafes, bars, and restaurants as well as tons of shops, including the popular Zara and H&M (among others), and some lesser known cutesy boutiques. Don’t forget to try the local burek (pizza burek is Kristen’s favorite) and if you’re daring sip on Maus’ go-to rakija, Sljivovica (made from plums). Bottoms up!
Visit the Island of Krk, the largest island in the Adriatic. Accessible by car or boat. Attractions include Zipline Edison, a two hour zip lining experience with incredible views, an 11th century church (Church of St. Quirinus), and a 12th century cathedral (St. Mary’s Cathedral). If you didn’t want to make an entire day of one island we would recommend taking an island tour via boat out of Opatija. The tour will take you to the nearby islands and drop you off for a scheduled number of hours at all the hot spots. Tried and true!
Another nearby Island with tons of charm. Visit the main resort, Cres Town, which reminds many of an Italian village due to previous Venetian rule. Much of the town dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. The main sights in Cres Town are the town walls and the Venetian Tower; the Church of St Mary, and the Municipal Loggia, both of which date from the 15th century.
If you’re into beer as much as the bride and groom, the San Servolo Resort and Beer Spa is a must! They brew their own incredible beer, serve fantastic food (the table side beef tatar is to die for), and did I mention you can bathe in warm beer and hops next to your own personal, endlessly flowing, ice cold tap! This spa room is moody and romantic with two large tubs, perfect for a couples night in. Warning: you may end up steering each other back to your room, giggling along the way. Also, tried and true!
Istria is full of wonderful towns, cities, vineyards, and is rich in culture. Visit the coliseum in Pula or go on a wine tasting tour throughout the region, and most definitely, we insist, go to Rovinj! Rovinj is a must see and one of Kristen’s favorite places in the world. Get lost in winding alleys and stumble upon adorable boutiques and cafes.. The old city is incredibly photogenic and full of hidden gems. Pro tip: Don’t stop in the first restaurant or bar you see on the water (you know, the ones with big pictures of their menu items on signs). Instead, wander deep in the alleyways and try to find a spot full of native speakers and ask the server for their recommendations. Dobar Tek!
Croatia’s world famous attraction, Plitvice Lakes National Park, seems to be straight out of a fairytale and is unbelievable, even while looking at it with your very own eyes. A series of 16 lakes are interconnected by countless dazzling waterfalls big and small. Wooden pathways wind through the lakes and around the falls allowing unparalleled views and incredible photo opportunities! An entry fee is required to explore the park and is well worth it! We highly recommend putting this one on your list!
We don’t need to say much about Venice. You all know it, you all know you’ve got to see it (if you haven’t already). Here is what you may not know: Venice is only about a three hour drive or bus ride away from Rijeka. Also, if you have Rovinj on your todo list you can hop on a ferry for a three and a half hour cruise across the Northern Adriatic Sea! You know you want to!
