The Disney World of gas stations features 104 fueling stations, 55,000 square feet of shopping, and 70 flavors of fountain drinks. Allyson and I went to their Daytona Beach location and were simply blown away by the bbq sandwiches and beef jerky selection.

The oldest masonry fort in the continental United States, the Castillo de San Marcos is a large Spanish stone fortress built to protect and defend Spain's claims in the New World. It's a National Monument and, at over 315 years old, it's the oldest structure in St. Augustine. Construction began in 1672 and lasted 23 years, until 1695. Many Spanish forts preceded the Castillo, however, this one made of coquina was impenetrable to enemy attack and was fire resistant.

In 1808 the residents of St. Augustine erected the pillars of the City Gate using coquina blocks. The Cubo Line was also reconstructed at the same time. Villa Zorayda’s most famed attraction is the museums “Sacred Cat Rug” which is over 2400 years old & made from the hairs of ancient cats that roamed the Nile River. The Villa Zorayda was built in 1883 as the residence of F. W. Smith utilizing his method of construction poured concrete & crushed coquina shell. Smith replicated architectural details of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain - which set a precedence for architecture in The city & began the Moorish Spanish Revival style of architecture & concrete & coquina construction seen throughout the city today. After 20 yrs as a residence the building became the Zorayda Club. After Smith’s death, in 1913 the building & Smith’s collections were sold to A. Mussallem, an immigrant from Lebanon a curator of oriental rugs & Egyptian artifacts. In the 1920s the Zorayda Club became a casino/speakeasy later in the 20s Abraham decided to close & live in the building as a residence. In 1933 the Mussallems opened the Villa Zorayda Museum.

Magnolia Avenue has been labeled “one of the most beautiful streets in America” by National Geographic. With live oaks creating a graceful canopy over the street, it is a lovely sight. For the best view, turn right on Myrtle Avenue just north of Mission Nombre de Dios, go to the end and turn left. Cameras are necessary.
