June 2023. It was a sweaty day in New York City. On the corner of 56th and 8th, Katie Kong laced up her sneakers and began a hefty march to meet a Mr. Mike Leong for happy hour oysters. Now, Ms. Kong had been in the Hinge game for quite some time, enough to know Mr. Leong was a wild card: His profile checks the boxes (long-term relationship, sushi-lover, 5’10” with a high vertical), but what is he really like? Meanwhile, Mr. Leong was finishing an early workday in Midtown East. He opened the dating app and navigated to Katie’s profile to recall their last conversation. A sporty gal, talking about boxing and 9-man Chinese volleyball. But hmm… perhaps a party gal, too – her weekend plans included a 5 a.m. excursion to see a DJ friend at Mission night club. This Katie is really cute, but I hope she’s not a raving ABG, he thought. Finally, the two met in Koreatown, and the anticipation did not disappoint. Mr. Leong quickly scheduled a second date (breaking his “no weekend dates” rule in the process), and Ms. Kong followed suit by canceling her plans for the third. With each meeting carrying the momentum of the one before, their attachment grew – she liked the way he put her mind at ease; he liked how she brought him out of his comfort zone. And eventually, like turned to love as their relationship blossomed over those shared memories: homemade pork belly kbbq, volleyball at Roosevelt Island, and late-night walks in Jersey City. Two and a half years later, Katie and Mike were ready to take the next step in their relationship. On October 2, 2025, against the backdrop of the Catskill Mountains, Mike dropped to one knee and asked Katie a question she doesn’t remember (because she blacked out), to which she responded with a sobbing “yes”.
