How Sam and Matt met wasn't unique. It was on Hinge in May of 2022. Matt just moved to Queens in April and Sam was in the process of moving back to New York from North Carolina after finishing grad school. Matt responded to Sam's prompt asking for help learning the rules of hockey. She just got into going to Hurricanes games in Raleigh. It just so happened that Matt's favorite team, the Rangers, were playing the Canes in the playoffs. What was unique is that they could not have their first date until a month later. Sam got Covid from her public health graduation and took two more trips back to NC to move out. So, Matt and Sam spoke every other day when the Rangers played the Canes and only discussed the game. The Rangers beat the Canes and then Sam stuck around to cheer on the Rangers. Their first date was a month later at Garden Social in East Meadow for $4 tacos and half off margaritas.
