Wedding Traditions

Wishes & Cards

Tradition #1

After the Newlyweds walk from the altar, everyone queues up outside to the bride and groom. Each person/couple takes their turn to give short personal wishes (hugs/kisses/hand shakes) and envelopes with wedding cards to the bride and groom.

Bread & Salt

Tradition #2

The Polish wedding tradition of welcoming newlyweds with bread and salt (“chlebem i solą”) occurs upon their arrival at the reception, where parents offer them bread (symbolizing prosperity, hospitality, and never going hungry) and salt (representing life's challenges). The couple eats a piece of bread and often takes a shot of vodka or water.

Midnight - Oczepiny

Tradition #3

Oczepiny is the wild and funny moment when a Polish wedding hits second gear at midnight. The bride will toss her veil/flowers to a crowd of unmarried women and the groom throws his bow tie to the unmarried guys - whoever catches them is "next in line" to get married. Then come the goofy games, dances, and slightly ridiculous challenges. Polish weddings do not believe in going to bed early.
