Lewes is called "the first town in the first state" because in 1631, it was the first site of European settlement in Delaware. There is so much history in this small town and so many historic sites to see including the Cannonball House, which is the only surviving structure that was damaged from the war of 1812 when the British bombarded Lewes, and you can even see the cannonball! There is also a historic campus a block away from the ceremony site which has 9 historic buildings including Sussex Tavern, a replica of a tavern on 2nd street that existed from 1792 to 1817. You can stop in a grab a drink and experience a bit of early colonial life.
Explore the coastal environment along the Seaside or the Pinelands Nature Trails, or hike the six miles of beach along the Atlantic Ocean. There are also swimming areas located in the state park. You can also rent bikes from Lewes Cycle Sports and bike along the trails!
