The Friends Who Make Us Who We Are

A blessing of friendship we do not take for granted.

Carly Sanderson

Matron of Honor

Carly and I have been in each others lives since I was born. We have been playmates, confidants and besties from the start. Our favorite childhood past times were “playing orphans”, and creating daring and elegant routines on her trampoline, the barn rope swing, and my parents hard wood floors. The world was our stage. She continues to be my confidant, playmate and bestie. Now we just share the time with her three adorable little lads.

Kristen Fennig

Bridesmaid

KJ married my brother Andrew twelve years ago and our lives have never been the same. She is a source of light, joy, wisdom and insight for me. She is my prayer warrior, and edifies me in the most encouraging and life giving ways. That all makes her sound so serious, but the fact is, she is one of the goofiest, fun-loving, trivia spouting balls of fun I've ever met. Fortunately for us, these traits have been passed down to her four adorable kiddos.

Chara Fennig

Bridesmaid

I have known Chara since I was seven years old. I always felt older than I was but that's mostly because people like Chara (this elegant, accomplished violinist and friend of my incredibly cool oldest brother), always treated me like one of the gang. She has loved me well throughout the years and I have grown in admiration of her as I have watched her develop into an incredible wife to my brother and mother to five awesome kids!

Tala Schwindt

Bridesmaid

Tala and I met in College. I remember Sophomore year watching this gorgeous and exotic freshman move into the room adjacent to mine. Our friendship didn't really launch until that "J-term" when we bonded over scarf knitting (how very English of us). Tala would invite me to her parents home in Columbus and we would feast on amazing Arabic cuisine and hang with her delightful family! Tala remains one of the most kind and generous people I know. She shines as a wife and mother and upholds a high standard of person-hood and hospitality. I'm honored to call her friend.

Cori Hernandez

Bridesman

Cori knows my Los Angeles journey, with all of its joys and struggles, better than any other person. She has been my roommate and/or neighbor for four of my six years in this city. She has been my partner in community building, worship leading and hosting for a solid core group of Los Angeles friends who feel like family. She is loyal and caring and always trying to connect her friends to great and new opportunities. Now I have the joy of watching her be a first time mother. She is more radiant than ever!

Kimmie Lucas

Bridesmaid

Kimmie and I met when she started attending the community group Cori and I were hosting. I didn't know at the time just how important her friendship would become. She is a person who will consistently ask how I am or ask for a coffee date and meet up even when it takes extra effort. When community group had to come to a close, she made sure we stayed in touch, and that has allowed us to grow even deeper in our friendship and has proven to be a most lovely gift. Kimmie has a passion for comedy (yes, that's a thing), and has a random trivia bank to rival even KJ's

Chris Boorman

Best Man

Chris and Stephen have known each other since they were around 12 years old, first meeting at church when Chris' family moved down from Alaska. He has known and supported Stephen through so many ups and downs, the throes of high school and young adulthood, and moving across country. They tripped to Budapest together, went on their senior road trip together, and of course cut mohawks together. (Ask for photos). He's an amazing example of a loving husband and father, and remains one of the best people with whom to discuss philosophy and snowboard, all in one stop. Stephen was honored to be the Best Man at Chris’ wedding. Favorite Memory: Spending the night on the Hoover dam, then sauntering out into the canyons for miles under the rising sun, during our first cross-country road trip.

John Cissel

Groomsman

John and Stephen originally met at Southeastern University in Florida. Stephen joined John’s band and it went from there. They spent a lot of time together writing music, figuring out what to do on an abandoned campus during several holiday breaks, longboarding all over, often discussing their Bioethics and Ethics courses, and eating Taco Bell for Thanksgiving on the trunk of a broken down car at least once. They have lived together in some capacity in four states since then, and still enjoy writing music together. John has an amazing singing voice, great musical talent and has a good not-singing voice too. Stephen was honored to be a groomsman in John’s wedding. Favorite Memory: Trying to shoo a naked toddler, who didn’t speak English, away from sleeping in our hammocks

Mark Kreiner

Groomsman

Mark is Stephen’s older brother. They were playmates in most everything, coming up with embarrassingly weird games, dreaming of fantastic adventures, and getting each other into trouble as much as possible. They used to sit together on a 3' x 8' chunk of carpet while playing their favorite game with an abysmally uncreative title ("kids"), and shouting at their neighbor's cat, "Satan." Although they haven't climbed trees together in a long time, Stephen thinks they really ought to get back at it again. :) Mark has been a great example of how to love strongly, loyally, and give his family and loved ones his best. Stephen was honored to be a groomsman in Mark’s wedding. Favorite Memory: Out of the blue, both deciding to end a childhood squabble by running to smell an aromatherapy candle

Paul Kreiner

Groomsman

Paul is Stephen’s eldest brother. Paul has gone before Stephen in every major life transition, has always, always been there to provide advice, insight, an outlet for venting, a bastion for learning, and a source of wisdom. Thankfully, he put up with Stephen’s annoying, youngest-sibling shenanigans, or Stephen wouldn't be writing this right now. He has taken Stephen on the most adventures of anyone so far (the challenge stands), and is one of the main reasons Stephen loves hiking and exploring outdoors. Paul has been Stephen's hero for as long as he can remember. Stephen was honored to be the kind of awkwardly old ring bearer at Paul’s wedding. Favorite Memory: Fleeing together from a pack of coyotes in a vineyard in the middle of nowhere... and beating Paul to the car.

Luke Salewski

Groomsman

Luke and Stephen have known each other since they were in elementary school, in “Kids Church.” They grew up learning to ski and snowboard at the local resort, playing music together at church, going on a few community outreach mission trips together, and then they ended up going to college in different parts of the country. Stephen is fortunate enough to now live in Los Angeles, where Luke resides, and Luke is a huge part of the reason he moved there. Luke resided in LA for several years before Stephen moved there, and he met and helped co-lead a church small group with Kinsey. Stephen’s first week in LA, Luke invited him there, where he first met Kinsey! Thanks Luke! Favorite Memory: Road tripping to Mammoth for the best snowboarding powder, and worst sleep, freezing in the car. 5/5

Matthew Vacaro

Groomsman

Matt and Stephen first met when Stephen moved to Massachusetts to pursue music. Stephen, Matt, and John Cissel's bands played a few shows together. Matt stands out as a passionate, candid, and loving dude, with a heart of gold, a ridiculously good ear for musical harmonies, and the vocal cords to put that to good use. They hit it off because Matt is so Matt, and now is the measurement by which all Matts are weighed. He is so good at hockey that Stephen sees no point in playing against him, he thinks things are funnier the second time, and he is best friends with John Cissel! Favorite Memory: Agreeing not to jump off a cliff into the super-cold Chattahoochee River in January, even though we hiked there in our swimming trunks with the sole intent of going in and doing just that.
