While in medical school, José was working at Lehigh Valley Health Network for a month-long rotation and decided to visit his childhood friends Carmen & Camille in Brooklyn for the weekend. At the same time, Kimmy and her friend Shannon were planning a weekend trip to New York to visit their college roommate, Camille. (You guessed it, the very same Camille). While attending St. Joe's, Camille would always tell Kimmy about her friend "Lázaro,” and how perfect he and Kimmy would be as a couple, but since he went to school in Florida, they never met. Neither Kimmy nor José knew the other would be there that weekend. I knew who he was as soon as I saw him, assuming he probably lived in New York now. We spent the weekend exploring Brooklyn and going dancing. It was an instant connection, so after enjoying each other's company all weekend, and realizing that he was living just 30 minutes away from where I lived, he asked me out on a date. We went to a concert on South Street followed by Philly's best cheesesteak (Jim's obvi).
