Anja and Kevin met in an African-American/Gender Studies intersectionality class at Northwestern. Kevin first made his move when he chose a desk near Anja's and scooted it all the way over until it was touching hers. Anja noticed that Kevin's phone case and notepad were lime green and that his smile was goofy and welcoming. After class one day, Anja headed to the Norris ice rink with her hockey stick and skates in hand, and Kevin took the opportunity to strike up a convo on the stairs. A few short weeks later, Anja and Kevin grabbed pizza together for lunch, and Anja laughed to herself as Kevin chatted with a big old chunk of tomato sauce between his two front teeth, and Anja knew he was a keeper. Years later, they would realize they took a German history class together back at the beginning of 2014.

Anja and Kevin spent the better part of a year getting to know each other over hearty meals and red wine. Kevin (finally!) asked Anja to be his girlfriend before the pair headed to their first Cubs game as a couple. The rest is history :)

Since Kevin had still never been, the couple took a trip to New York over Labor Day weekend, where they enjoyed miles of sightseeing on foot, delectable food and drink, and a trip to Lion King on Broadway with Anja's mom and brother. After the Lion King, Kevin took Anja to Washington Square Park, where he proposed under the arch. They spent the rest of the weekend celebrating with friends (but mostly with each other) before heading back to Chicago.
