Pat and Kevin's first meeting is a tale as old as time - they were matched up against each other in flip cup at the bar. Kevin had just moved to Los Angeles earlier that year and joined the gay kickball league in West Hollywood where Pat had already played a couple seasons. They met at a kickball social that neither of them were supposed to be at. Kevin was supposed to be working and Pat was supposed to be driving south to meet his family at Disneyland. Because of some lucky last minute plan changes, Pat and Kevin both showed up at the Gym Bar kickball social where people from all the teams in the league were playing flip cup. Kevin was on a winning streak at the flip cup table and challenged Pat's team to a game, where Kevin and Pat were matched up directly across from each other. Through a series of buzzer-beater matches, competitive trash talk started turning into fun flirting. At the end of the game, Pat's team dethroned Kevin's, but Pat was still very taken by Kevin's flip cup skills and other appealing qualities. So, Pat invited Kevin to join him and his team out for dinner at the Five Guys next door. Kevin, thoroughly impressed by Pat's choice in food and other charming features, said yes. After they finished their burger's, Pat's friends played good wingmen and left Kevin and Pat by themselves so Pat had the chance to ask for Kevin's number. They exchanged numbers and went out together later that night for an evening of drinks and dancing. The next day they were both physically feeling a little worse for the wear but they were both so happy they went to that kickball social that neither of them were supposed to be at.
Pat and Kevin, always the practical types, started off the engagement process by having a negotiation on who would get to propose. Pat made the argument that he's not nearly as good at romantic gestures as Kevin, so he really wanted to prove he could pull this off. Kevin agreed with the caveat that Pat only had a six month head start once they hit their three year anniversary. After that Kevin had free rein to come along and pull off something wonderful and creative. Their friend group was already planning a trip to San Diego Pride, and Pat decided it was the perfect place to do it. Three years prior, San Diego Pride was their first major trip together, as well as the first time the two of them said "I love you" to each other. Pat (with an assist from Cindy Toland) convinced Kevin that the pair needed to take a nice picture for the moms (aka "The Cindys") and brought him out to Coronado Island to use the amazing city view as a backdrop. He proposed with the ring inside a Poke Ball, a reference to the first thing Pat ever said to Kevin when they met complimenting his shirt. Kevin was fooled until pretty much the car ride over...it's hard to hide something that bulky in your pocket without arising some suspicion. Meanwhile, Pat had tasked their friends with secretly decorating the house they were staying at for an immediate engagement party, which DID surprise Kevin. Overall it was a fantastic weekend, one that Kevin and Pat will remember for the rest of their lives. *Special Thanks to our friends Aaron and Bubba for being our photographers and videographers for the proposal!
