Whale Watching
February is whale watching season! Samaná Bay is the most important humpback breeding and calving grounds in the North Atlantic - one of the best times and places on the planet to see them up close for extended periods. This once in a lifetime experience to meet one of the world's largest mammals. Reservations can start to fill around 2-months in advance, so book early! There should be options to add transportation to your booking when you do.
El Limón Waterfall
Tucked into the a lush tropical valley is the 150ft high El Limón Waterfall. It can be reached by foot or horseback and is 30mins away from Las Terrenas. The trip takes about a half day. Flora tours (linked below) is a solid option, but you may find other operators online or in town that can assist just was well.
Parque Nacional Los Haitises
Los Haitises National Park is a short boat ride away, covering thousands of acres of rainforest, mangroves, caves, and remote beaches home to hundreds of bird species. Most visitors book a guided day tour from Las Terrenas — a worthwhile full-day excursion for anyone looking to get off the beach for a while.
Surfing and Boogie Boarding
Surfing and Boogie Boarding: Las Terrenas is a great place for beginner surfers without big crowds. You can rent both surf and boogie boards at Mosquito Bar and often near Hotel Playa Cosón. There are also a number of surf schools in town you could book lessons in advance with.
Scube and Snorkel
The waters around Las Terrenas are home to coral reefs, sea turtles, rays, and colorful reef fish. You can explore the underwater environment by snorkel or scuba depending on your comfort level. February is one of the best months of the year for underwater visibility, with calm seas and warm water. Several dive centers in town offer everything from beginner intro dives to guided reef excursions for certified divers, with snorkel trips available for those who prefer to stay closer to the surface.
ATVs & Buggys
Rent a 4x4 buggy or ATV and explore Las Terrenas' beaches, rivers, and jungle trails. Several tour operators in town offer guided half-day adventures. Search online at the link below, or ask your AirBNB host or hotel for current recommendations.
Kayaking
Paddle along the coastline at your own pace. Keep an eye out for coral, sea turtles, and secluded beaches along the way. Kayak rentals and guided tours are available through local operators in Las Terrenas.
