Things To Do

We are so excited to host you in Vermont! Middlebury and the surrounding area are full of great places to eat and drink and explore. Here are some we recommend. Note — it is about a 25 minute drive from Bread Loaf Campus to the town of Middlebury.

Ripton Country Store

1192 Vermont Route 125, Ripton, VT 05766

For those staying on site at Bread Loaf Campus, this is an iconic old general store, and a great spot to grab snacks. They have two sandwiches available— ham and turkey :)

Otter East Bakery & Deli

51 Ossie Road, VT 05753

Delicious sandwich shop a few miles from Bread Loaf.

7 South Sandwich Company

1396 U.S. 7, Middlebury, VT 05753

Another good place for sandwiches on Saturday!

Middlebury Natural Foods Co-Op

9 Washington Street, Middlebury, VT 05753

The best grocery store in town, full of local produce and delicious premade sandwiches and snacks.

Sandy's Books and Bakery

30 North Main Street, Rochester, VT 05767

Local and organic bakery, inside a book store! A drive from Bread Loaf Campus the opposite direction from Middlebury— Rochester is smaller and will be less crowded than Middlebury.

Haymaker Bun Company

7 Bakery Lane, Middlebury, VT 05753

One of the best breakfast and lunch spots in Middlebury, especially if you grab a table on the deck overlooking Otter Creek.

American Flatbread

137 Maple Street, Middlebury, VT 05753

Great for dinner— but reservations needed especially for big groups.

Two Brothers Tavern

86 Main Street, Middlebury, VT 05753

A Middlebury classic, right in the heart of town.

The Mad Taco

3 Mill Street, Middlebury, VT 05753

Sit by the river and have some tacos or a burrito and a margarita. They have great vegetarian options too!

Rosie's

886 U.S. 7, Middlebury, VT 05753

A classic VT diner.

The Vermont Bookshop

Lindsey's favorite book shop.

Snake Mountain Hike

Snake Mountain is a great hike and about 5.5 miles roundtrip. The trailhead is a 20 minute drive from Middlebury, about 45 minutes from Bread Loaf.

Middlebury Snowbowl

6886 Vermont Route 125, Hancock, VT 05748

Lindsey grew up here — this is where she learned to ski! Come for a chairlift ride starting at 10am Saturday. You can also hike up to the top from the base lodge.

Rikert Outdoor Center

106 College Cross Road, Ripton, VT

Rikert Outdoor Center is located in the heart of the Green Mountain National Forest. Come enjoy 55+ km of trails.

For all the days along the way
