It was the summer of 2017. Laurel lived in the Florida Keys working in coral conservation. She flew up to visit her best friend Megan (maid of honor) in New York City one weekend. Megan and Kevin had run in the same athlete circle at University of Rochester, and became close friends after moving to the city. That weekend, Laurel met Kevin, Shaun, Pat, and Luke (groomsmen) before heading to a day of live music. Once Laurel realized the Jimmy Buffet shark fin hat was Kevin’s, they clicked. The pair could be seen talking and dancing into the night. The following night Kevin invited everyone to a party at Conor (brother & best man) and Melissa’s (sister-in-law) apartment. In true Upper East Side Saturday night fashion, they ended the night at Dorrian’s, once again dancing the night away. Laurel was on a flight home before she knew it, but the spark that was lit that weekend wouldn’t fade. Unbeknownst to both of them, Kevin and Laurel couldn’t stop thinking about each other. Any action to move forward would seem so brazen, a long shot that the other might feel the same, after just one weekend and so much distance. Kevin took a chance, and made the daring move to invite a girl he had just met to his brother Conor’s wedding…3 months later in Long Island. The only thing crazier than the invite was how easily and happily Laurel said yes. Their first date? A flight away, as his date to the wedding. And meeting the entire Sheehy clan in the process. Laurel and Kevin made the distance between the Florida Keys and NYC work, knowing what they had was real and worth the challenge. After an entire year of airports and phone calls, Laurel accepted a job in NYC. Their first born, Mookie, came along shortly after. And the rest, it’s history.
