Julie and Kevin met in 2018 as volunteers at the Equal Access Clinic, a student-run clinic that provides care to uninsured patients in Gainesville. They first became friends through the clinic and later spent many hours together in a research lab, where they measured mice blood pressure on Saturday afternoons and bonded during long days in the lab. They were best friends and one day, Kevin asked Julie on their first official date at her favorite restaurant, Chuy’s. At the time, Kevin was preparing to apply to medical school, and the future felt uncertain, but they decided to continue growing together and see where life would take them. Kevin was accepted to the University of Florida College of Medicine, and a year later Julie was accepted as well, something that felt a little like fate. During medical school, they spent many long hours studying together, keeping each other well fed during exam season and always offering a shoulder to lean on during the long and demanding years of training. Together they celebrated milestones like finishing medical school, deciding where Kevin would complete residency, and bringing together their two cultures, Indian and Colombian, which are both meaningful parts of their families and their life together. After years of love and friendship, Kevin proposed to Julie in Miami, surrounded by the love and support of their families. Julie and Kevin look forward to continuing to grow together as they begin the next chapter of their lives side by side, excited for a future filled with love, laughter, and many days shared over butter chicken and empanadas.
