Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is a living legacy of Isaac W. Bernheim, who was Alex's maternal great-great-great-grandfather. Isaac emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1867 when he was eighteen-years old and with only $4 in his pocket. After struggling as a peddler, he settled in Kentucky when his horse died there. Isaac eventually achieved great success with his Bernheim Brothers Distilling Company and his popular brand of bourbon, I. W. Harper. In 1929, Isaac bought the land that would become Bernheim Forest, now over 16,000 acres and just 25 miles south of Louisville. He dedicated this land as a gift to the people of Kentucky in appreciation of his new homeland and with the mission to renew and restore the bond between people and nature. Alex's family has remained involved in the legacy of the Forest ever since. We are grateful to be getting married in such a meaningful place & we’re excited to share it with you!
We met in graduate school in Brooklyn, New York. It took a few classes for us to get in synch: during one group discussion, Kevin congratulated Alex on her upcoming nuptials when he misheard her weekend plans. He eventually passed a note to Alex and asked her out, but the gesture surprised her because it was anonymous! She’d hoped the note was from Kevin, but really, who had thrown that piece of paper? Despite the mishaps, we had a great first date...and then went to a poetry reading a few days later where Kevin gifted Alex with a book of Oscar Wilde quotes, one of which confirms that "the proper basis for a marriage is mutual misunderstanding."
