Our story begins in September 2015 in Baja California, Mexico. We met doing a 6 month school together and traveled to Asia in a group of 14. Even living together in tight quarters on this trip, we didn't find our connection. We weren't friends and would have even considered each other enemies. If you told either of us we would be getting married one day; we would have thought you were crazy! Fast forward to 2017 - we ended up traveling together again. This time we co-led a group of photographers to Brazil. During the months leading up to our trip - through long days of planning and many coffee shop visits later - we built a deep friendship. During the 2 months spent in Brazil, we learned how well we could work together and how compatible our personalities were. We went as best friends and returned wondering if we could ever be more than that. It wasn't until July of 2019, when Kenzie moved away from Mexico to South Africa, that everything changed. We said our goodbyes sad to be separating from our best friend and were disappointed a romantic relationship didn't seem to work in time. Alberto realized he could live his life without Kenzie in it - but he didn't want to. Over her Christmas break from school, she traveled through Mexico on her way home and, on December 17th, sealed the deal. We wanted to be together, even if it meant fighting through distance until she could move back to Mexico. Well... that's Kenzie's version of the story. If you ask Alberto - he'll tell you that he wanted to be with her but was afraid they wouldn't make it through months of Facetime calls and texts. He didn't realize their "commitment talk" in December marked the beginning of their dating relationship. It didn't become 100% real for him until Kenzie moved back in July 2020 and was with him again. Even then, he waited 2 months to "officially" ask her to be his girlfriend on September 27th, where she said, "Of course, I already have been for 9 months!"
We got engaged on July 20th, 2021. If you read our story, you might see a theme of 7's. Key dates in our relationship seem to be centered around dates with 7 in them. Down to the detail that we got engaged the 7th month of the year. We didn't even plan our wedding specifically for the 7th of May, it just worked out that way with the venue. Something special for us is to see how God orchestrated our relationship so that we could end up together, despite the many barriers we had to fight through along the way. This small detail of 7 seems like a gift from God, a reminder that He is in the details in every aspect of our lives.
