How "Us" Happened

Lots of Jesus.

If you go through my twitter, it will look like Emmy and I have dated since 2016. This is because from the moment I met him, I unknowingly took on a role as his biggest fan. We were both growingly involved on campus and whenever I would catch him in the quad running for student government or selling cookies for a cause, I would snap a pic and share what he's working on on social media. It was crazy because in my head, I had no crush on him. I just really digged his passion. It wasn't until early 2017 when one of his guy friends, Derrick (now a groomsman), told Emmy that I was checking him out at our university's annual Black Excellence Pageant. I recall no such thing, but it was at that point where our relationship went from friendship to romantic... Kind of. Neither of us knew Christ at the time which translated into us treating our relationship the only way we knew how - untitled, selfishly motivated, with little commitment and lots of unsettled baggage. It was in this period where Dan and Kristen Duran, two fellow El Pasoans from a ministry called Every Nation Campus, reached out to us both - separately, on two different parts of campus (crazy, right?). Once we put this together, we decided to respond to their efforts by becoming Sunday Christians, which was a step-up from our previous college role of being CEO Christians (Christmas/Easter Only). We would go to church and give God our Sundays, but didn't trust Him enough to give Him our every-days. In March 2018, we attended Every Nation's student conference (literally walked in arguing) and felt God break down some of the emotional barriers that had convinced us we were too far, too weak, and too attached to temporary pleasures to ever find peace in God. Boy, were we wrong. From that moment, God has used our testimony to lead Bible studies, counsel and seek counsel from other Christian couples, and grant us a constant reminder of Christ's redemptive power. We haven't looked back since. - Kenna (Almost) Orioha

The Real Story

Kenna was always crazy about me.

When I first met Kenna, we were both at a dance practice for the African Student Org (ASO) dance team. Kenna was nervous because she was about to dance in front of a guy she liked. I was just minding my business and eavesdropping. See, I was there because the dance team didn't have enough guys, because there was lot of girls so I thought one might like me, and because I didn't have a lot of friends. When I left the dance team a week later, I realized all my reasons didn't really matter if I just couldn't dance. Though it didn't seem like it, she was already into me. I knew because on my bday, her and her now-bridesmaid, Kianna, baked me cookies. Kianna and a friend ended up having dinner with me that day too. But Kenna didn't come because she didn't wanna seem desperate. She also would say hi to me when she'd see me around campus, took a picture of me at a fundraiser, endorsed me as a write-in candidate for a student govt. senate candidate, and agreed with me on politics. She was really blowing her cover even though she never said anything. Then we saw each other at a pageant a few months later and as we exchanged hellos, my roommate/now-groomsman Derrick told me what she already knew but had never said - she thought I was fine. So, I realized she felt that way too and asked her the next day if I could study with her at the library. We had our first date that Wednesday as we went to see Get Out at the movies. That was also a sign because we saw get out, but I knew she wanted to get in a relationship with me. I'd love to tell you that our wedding was the cherry on top to great beginnings. But the real truth is that our story is really just like many others in the Bible. It's the story of God's redemptive and awesome love transforming people and them never being the same again. And God made this happen because I could never have found someone as elegant, radiant, and stunning as my Kenna on my own. Ask me for the long story in person... she liked me first. - Emmy
