Your presence is gift enough! If you're feeling generous, red envelopes will be provided at the venue on September 6th, 2019, as is custom at Chinese weddings.
Chinese regard red as the symbol of energy, happiness, good luck, and prosperity. The importance of the red envelopes (called hóngbāo in Mandarin) isn’t the cash held inside, it’s actually the envelope itself.
For those guests not familiar with Chinese culture, it is common to give gifts that correspond with an even number (not an odd number) so that the couple will receive good luck and happiness throughout the marriage. Consider giving an amount ending with the number 8, as it is associated with prosperity and good fortune. It’s also unlucky to give a red envelope with the number 4 in it. The Chinese word for 4 (Sì) sounds like death (Sǐ), and therefore is considered bad luck in Chinese.
