Think wedding casual. To us, this means "be neat, be comfortable and be a little dressy." SHOES are very important. Our reception will include Contra Dance. (See the "What is Contra Dance?" FAQ. ) So you want flats or shoes with low heels so you can swing with your partner. Either wear or bring a pair.
Yes. One of the best things about contra dance is its friendliness. No worries if you did not bring a partner or came with a committed wallflower. Contra dance is for everyone, and you can ask anybody to dance. After just one dance, you will have interacted with 20 or more people. Be friendly! Introduce yourself to folks at your table, and at the party.
You need: comfortable shoes, enthusiasm and a smile.
Contra dance is similar to square dance since it is a dance for couples and it is based on figures rather than fancy footwork. There is a caller who will teach you the figures and walk you through each dance. There will be live music, and you'll need a partner. You do figures with your partner and the other couples, and you dance in long lines of couples. Following what the caller says, you'll find that the figures move the couples up and down in the line, and before long you have danced with pretty much everyone in the line. Very sociable !! Our "Gallery" page has links to a couple of videos, and you can check Brooklyn Contra's "New to Contra Dance?" page at https://www.brooklyncontra.org/new-to-contra-dance for more information and some good pointers.
