Reno is the closest airport to South Lake Tahoe, and the most recommended since the drive along the east side of the lake to our house is a beautiful one! Driving distance from Reno is about 1 hr 15 min.

The drive up to South Lake Tahoe

The drive up to Tahoe from the Bay or Southern California is really pretty once you get off the 5. You'll pass rolling farmlands, fruit stands, and drive along the American river if coming up on HWY 50. If coming from Southern California, consider driving up the 395 to get the best eastern Sierra views! You'll get the best views of Mt Whitney, Schatts Bakery in Bishop, and an all around prettier drive.
