Because Spetses is just off the coast of mainland Greece, you can also travel by car. If you’re not keen on boats or are traveling in a group, it may be easier and more economical to travel to Spetses by car. You can arrange a car from the Athens International Airport and make the 2.5 hour trip to Kosta, a town in the Peloponnese just across the bay from Spetses. Once you arrive in Kosta, short water taxis are available to Spetses. Boats leave every 15 minutes and take only 10 minutes to cross the bay. The price of the car service to Kosta is around 200 euros. We will update this section with more information and pricing as the date gets closer.
One of the things we love about Spetses is that there are no cars allowed on the island – with the exception of a few taxis. Depending on where you are staying, we’d recommend (and can help arrange) taxis upon arrival in Spetses to transport you to your accommodations. After that, we recommend walking, biking and/or motoring around the island at your leisure. There are numerous rental spots around the island where you can rent bicycles, motor bikes and four wheelers at affordable daily rates.
Spetses boasts a wide variety of beautiful hotels and houses you can book during your stay. In terms of houses, we recommend checking out houses on Airbnb and Pretty Greek Villas. Make sure you're renting a house on the island of Spetses (not a neighboring island) and try to book a place that's close to town for the sake of convenience. We visited a number of wonderful hotels while in Spetses. Our favorites include Poseidonion Grand Hotel, Orloff Resort, Zoe's Club, and Nissia Hotel.
The majority of flights back to the States depart Athens in the late morning or early afternoon. If you’re taking the ferry, we recommend making your way back to Athens for the night and departing the next morning for the States. This spares you an early morning departure and allows plenty of time for connections through Spetses and Piraeus Port (Added bonus: you get to explore Athens!). If you’re taking a car service, this affords you a bit more flexibility in your departure time. Please remember, however, that the trip back to Athens will take at least 3 hours – which can make a morning flight back to the States challenging.
