Del Popolo is one of our favorite neopolitan/californian style wood fired pizza joints located just a short trip from our apartment in Nob Hill. They have a seasonally changing menu, natural wines and a cool laid back atmosphere. It's a difficult table to snag but if you go early and are willing to wait a little it is well worth it. Heath endorses their pizza crusts with all four paws.
The Woods in Russian Hill is an outpost for a small microbrewery here in San Francisco. The tiny, yet cozy bar has empanadas, bar games, and delicious cold beer. Our favorite is the "Morpho", a tart botanical brew made with Yerba Mate, Hibiscus and Bay Leaf. They also have a range of IPA's and other styles.
Saint Frank Coffee is our local indy roastery on Polk Street. They source exceptional beans and pull the perfect cappuccino; great, simple pastries and cookies too!
Hook Fish is a cute little fish restaurant in the outskirts of the city by Greg's old apartment on Ocean Beach. They have fresh, local sustainable seafood, cold beer and wine. Its a fun little place run by the local surfers and just a block down the street from Mollusk, the local surf and clothing store.
Tosca is a classic San Francisco bar and restaurant in the North Beach neighborhood, on Columbus Avenue. Located just a few blocks from the old "beat" neighborhood and across the street from City Lights Bookstore and Vesuvio Cafe, it was remodeled a few years ago and now stands as a great place to see a convivial side of the city.
Bolinas is located about an hour north of the city on the Marin Coast. It is a "very laid back" little independent enclave that is home to surfers, creatives, craftsman and survivors of the hippy era. It is a fun little day trip from the city and a great place to visit a simpler way of life. Just north of Bolinas, on the coast in Marshall, is Hog Island Oysters, one of the last remaining oyster farms in the area. They have a great outdoor space to either shuck your own Oysters or buy them shucked for you.
Scribe Winery is a favorite of ours in Sonoma, opened by two brothers who decamped from LA to build a picturesque Hacienda and make fun, accessible wines. This is one of the more "instagrammable" places in Wine Country and is often booked for weeks in advance (call ahead!). Whenever we find ourself in the neighborhood we try to make a trip here, and you should too!
