Our wedding venue is actually part of an estate turned public park and can be a fun place to visit for kids and adults. There are Italian and Japanese gardens, a petting zoo, various animal habitats (bear, bison, birds of prey, etc) which are all free to visit. There is also the Robins Nature Center but do note there is a fee.
Hands down our favorite thing about Richmond is JRPS. For those who aren't familiar, the James River runs right through downtown Richmond and much of the riverfront has been preserved as public park space. In addition to miles of hiking trails and scenic overlooks, you can even go whitewater paddling if you're feeling more adventurous - Richmond is the only urban city in the country with Class IV white water rapids in the middle of downtown. Do let us know if you want specific recommendations for any JRPS spots!
There will be an art show right next to our wedding venue! This past year there were over 350 artisans in attendance so if you're looking for something fun to do right before the wedding or the day after, check this out. Please be aware that this is a popular event in a small neighborhood and parking can get a bit busy in the immediate area, so plan accordingly. Rideshare is very easy in the city and there is also usually a shuttle from City Stadium.
This is a super cute area full of shops and restaurants. You can't go wrong with a walk through Carytown.
It's no guarantee, but if the Byrd happens to be playing a movie while you're in town then definitely go check it out! It is a stunning historic theater that shows new and old films. It sometimes even has a live organ performance before the movies! It is one of Lynda's favorite places in Richmond.
Looking for breweries? Look no further! This revitalized industrial neighbor is full of tap rooms and restaurants.
It may sound like an odd recommendation, but Hollywood Cemetery is a beautiful place to visit. It is one of the most visited cemeteries in Virginia, is a registered arboretum, and has a fantastic overlook of the river and the city. And for the history buffs, presidents James Monroe and John Tyler are buried here!
There are several museums in the city: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts - FREE to visit except for special exhibits. Also has a nice lawn for lounging. On Friday evenings it becomes a gathering spot with occasional live music. Virginia Museum of History and Culture - Right next door to the VMFA. Beautiful building with a variety of exhibits. Science Museum of Virginia - Great for kids! American Civil War Museum
