Some love stories begin with a spark. Ours started with two 17-year-olds falling for each other as college sweethearts at UMBC—young, full of dreams, and unaware of just how deep our connection already ran. What we didn’t know then was that fate had started writing our story long before college ever did. As toddlers, we actually played together—thanks to Bao’s mom, who babysat Kellie back in the day. Somewhere in a photo album, there are baby pictures of us side by side, unaware of the beautiful future ahead. Maybe it really was meant to be. From the start, Kellie’s bright, bubbly spirit was perfectly balanced by Bao’s calm and easygoing nature. She brought the energy and endless chatter, while he brought the steady warmth and quiet humor. We were opposites in the best way—each other's match in a way that just felt right. We’ve been each other’s first and only love. Through the highs and lows of grad school, distance, and the demands of building careers, our love grew stronger. Bao moved out of state to pursue optometry, while Kellie stayed behind, cheering him on every step of the way. After he earned his doctorate, he came home to Maryland—closer to Kellie, and closer to family. Then it was Kellie’s turn. As a nurse in the thick of a global pandemic, she made the bold choice to return to school to become a nurse practitioner. Bao stood by her side, supporting her just as she had done for him. Eleven years, two doctorate degrees, countless memories, challenges, and triumphs later—Bao got down on one knee, and Kellie said yes.
