Sarah grew up attending Christ Community United Methodist Church (CCC) in Marion, IA. She stopped attending there when she moved to Oklahoma to attend Oral Roberts University. After finishing college, she lived in Des Moines, IA for four years. Eventually, she moved back to the Cedar Rapids area. In the following years, she attended a few churches, but God brought her back to CCC in the summer of 2017. In the summer of 2019, Joel's church closed. Although this was saddening, God used it for good. Joel was invited to play french horn and violin for CCC's worship team. Although Sarah noticed him on stage and wondered if he was single, she was busy with other things and figured he wasn't her type. A few months later, the church was celebrating its 30th anniversary. There was a lunch and music out on the lawn. Joel had arrived early and parked on the grass, where others later parked both behind and in front of him. Even though he didn't know many people, he was stuck and couldn't leave after he finished eating. Sarah was busy socializing. One person she visited with was Susan Briley (who played piano on the worship team and was like an aunt to Sarah). Susan asked Sarah if she had met Joel. Sarah said "no" and then ran to her car to get something for Susan. When Sarah returned, Susan was standing next to Joel. Susan introduced them and then walked away. Not really knowing what to do with each other, Sarah and Joel stood there making conversation for about an hour. Although it was awkward, Sarah and Joel both knew what Susan was up to. So, Sarah found him on Facebook and asked him to a concert. Although he had other plans that night, they quickly made arrangements to attend a different concert. Since then, they have been almost inseparable. After knowing him only one week, Sarah wrote in her journal that she was going to marry him. After knowing her only 12 days, Joel asked Sarah to be his girlfriend and told her he loved her.
Joel and Sarah started talking about getting married pretty early in their relationship. They had planned to get engaged in February or March. But, with a new puppy and a foreign exchange student, February was a whirlwind and they didn't get engaged then. In March, the world as we knew it changed as schools and businesses closed down and politicians called for people to socially distance because of COVID-19. On March 27, 2020, the governor of Iowa called for jewelry stores to be closed. Although Joel and Sarah had one earlier appointment at Philips Diamond, they still hadn't gotten a ring. They felt discouraged after hearing the governor's proclamation. That night, Joel and Sarah were hanging out on the couch looking for a movie to watch. Sarah asked Joel what he thought they should do about getting engaged. Joel pulled a wooden, cross necklace out of his pocket. He began to tell her that someone was passing them out at the 30th anniversary of the church and that he kept it because it reminded him of the day he met her and her son, Noah. Then, he gave that necklace to her and asked her to marry him. Of course she said "YES!" Joel met virtually with the wonderful staff at Philips Diamond to design the perfect ring for her. It had her birthstone (the diamond) in a princess cut (because she is his Sarah, his Princess). Surrounding the diamond are six purple sapphires to represent his birthstone (the amethyst). There is a D for D'Camp engraved on the ring, and on the inside is a special engraving in the shape of the cross that Joel proposed with. He presented her ring to her on Mother's Day of this year.
