Ashton had broken his arms the summer before second grade. We were in the same class and our teacher sat us next to each other to complete assignments together. It would have been impossible to read Ashton's writing otherwise. We were grade school friends participating in recess games, useless bets over the Super Bowl, and class competitions. (No one mention the Mad Minutes of 4th Grade). We reacquainted in high school and loosely stayed in touch even going to Homecoming together one year. Our paths crossed once again in college, this time to stay forever. Ashton proposed at the Chippewa Nature Center over an outlook close to where Keira teaches. We had just spent the day setting up Keira's classroom and Ashton was insisting we go for a walk to "relax". In the wetlands below, an egret could be seen and a beautiful view. It was perfect and very "us".
