A Spectacular Proposal

November 23, 2022

If you watched the video above, here's the backstory: I (Jen) have been diving since 2005. Underwater has always been my happy place. My favorite way to go diving is on a liveaboard cruise. These trips are usually attended by experienced divers, and the activity plan is basically this: if you're wet, it's time to eat. If you're dry, it's time to dive. Sleep in between. That's it. I wanted to go, and Terry wanted to get certified. I was thrilled to be able to dive with my best friend. Because of his work schedule, though, he couldn't do the book work or pool work before our trip at all -- so without putting even a toe in the water, he agreed to do this trip and his entire course on the boat. (Gulp! I admit, I was a little worried -- I mean, what if he hates it and is then stuck on a boat out to sea with 15 other people who want to do nothing else?) We arrived in Turks & Caicos on Saturday evening and went out to sea. Sunday he didn't even get in the water. He did only bookwork while we all did 5 dives throughout the day. Monday he finished his bookwork and tests and they took him ashore for his confined water skills while the rest of us, again, did multiple dives. Tuesday he did the last of his confined water skills and his checkout dives, and was certified by the end of that day. On Wednesday morning, he did his very first open water dive as a certified diver with the rest of the group, and he did great! Best of all, he seemed to be having fun! It was already a perfect trip. Wednesday morning, on dive #2, we were the last 2 divers in the water. The group converged under the boat and headed off after the dive master, and Terry swam in the wrong direction. After some confusion (and by this I mean, me thinking, WTH are you doing, bro? everyone is leaving?), I followed him -- only marginally aware that Cyril, the ship's video pro, was hanging around near us instead of following the group. At the time, I assumed they put an extra dive master in the water just to be safe because Terry was so new. Little did I know, the whole boat crew was in on this conspiracy. Terry went to the sandy bottom and motioned for me to follow him, so I did. He got on his knees and started writing in the sand. I am embarrassed to admit how long it took me to figure out what was going on here. W...I...L...L...Y...O...U.... -- at this point (seriously) I was thinking, will I...? Will I what? Do you need more weights? Is your regulator leaking? What are you trying to tell me? When I looked up and saw Cyril videotaping us, it started to dawn on me -- in slow motion, like everything that happens underwater. He was almost finished writing "...marry me?" in the sand when I finally understood. I was so shocked I nearly spit out my regulator. (Terry reports being glad my response was not to inflate my BC and shoot for the surface). He literally just learned how to dive! He opened a zippered pocket on his swim trunks and pulled out my ring, attached to a tiny bungee cord, untied it, and offered it to me -- all without blowing through his whole tank of air, dropping the ring, or having to fend off a barracuda trying to eat the extremly shiny blingle in his hand. So, obviously, I said yes, still flabbergasted that this man secretly carried a giant diamond ring through 3 airports, into a foreign country, got on a yacht, learned how to dive, put said ring into his SWIM TRUNKS, jumped OFF said yacht, swam to the ocean floor, and managed to execute this crazy plan at a depth of 52 feet without any problems, as if he'd been diving his whole life. He was cool as a cucumber, and, of course, why not? What could possibly go wrong? He did all that, *and* (thank goodness) conspired with the boat crew on the Aggressor to make sure we had it on video. This guy is apparently not afraid of anything -- a quality that serves him well. We can't wait for all of you to join us in September when we tie the knot!
