This is one of our favorite hikes (& workouts!) on Oahu. The trail follows an old gas-powered rail tramway, offering stunning panoramic views of the east side of the island. It’s become a special tradition for us to tackle this hike on Christmas morning. Don’t forget to bring water and sun protection, this is a relatively short but difficult hike! — and if you can beat Andrew’s time to the top, a prize awaits!
This is a fun hike with stunning views, stairs, and mostly shaded sections along a 4.5 mile long trail. The trail head starts in a residential area so be mindful when parking. Bring water and watch out for wild pigs!
This place is very special, as it's where Andrew proposed to Kayo! The waves and currents can get a bit rough during the summer, so be sure to listen to the lifeguards and watch for any warning flags or signs. The Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail is just half a mile before the beach park. This paved, easy hike is perfect for kids and strollers, offering stunning ocean views! On clear days you can see the island of Moloka'i from the lookout points.
One of our favorite places to get traditional Hawaiian food! On Andrew’s first trip home to meet Kayo’s family, Jerry (Kayo’s dad) took Andrew on his famous road trip around the island. One of the stops was to pick up lunch at the poi factory and enjoy it at Kualoa Regional Park which overlooks China man’s hat, an islet in Kaneohe Bay. The squid luau is a must and don’t forget to order a sweet lady of waiahole (haupia ice cream over warm kulolo) for dessert!
In the winter, Waimea bay calls big wave surfers to ride up to 50 foot waves and is home to the Eddie Aikau big wave invitational. In the summer it is as calm as a pond offering a chance for locals to show off their diving skills from a rock in the bay. This is a great beach for a beach day up on the North Shore. Waimea Valley is across the street and has a botanical garden, waterfall, and info on Native Hawaiian history.
A North Shore visit is not complete without a visit to Andrew's favorite sandwich shop, Storto's! They have killer sandwiches on Hawaiian sweet bread! Make sure to get the papaya dressing and bring cash! On the way back to town, stop at Dole Plantation for some Dole Whip. Enter the building from the back to avoid the crowds.
This was the shave ice spot Kayo and her cousins went to as kids. They offer a huge variety of flavors, plus the option to add azuki (sweet red bean), mochi, and condensed milk. The first time Kayo brought Andrew here, he loved it so much he ordered a second shave ice right after finishing the first. Don’t forget to bring cash!
This is a great place to get an Acai bowl. Kayo's favorite is the Hawaiian which has a scoop of pa'i'ai (pounded taro before it becomes poi).
Fruit in Hawaii is always delightful but it is especially so in the Summer. Head over to the KCC Farmers Market for local fruits and goodies. Some of our favorite summer fruits are Kahuku papaya, lychee, mango, and pineapple.
