February 2018 We were living in New Orleans, both of us having stayed in the city after attending Tulane University. Kayla was working at a tech job downtown and Cody was in his second year of medical school. We met like all millennials do, through a dating app. It turned out we both had the same favorite restaurant in the city, Lebanon’s, so it made the perfect spot for our first date. Despite Cody secretly freaking out that we didn’t share food on our first date, we clicked immediately. We bonded over our love for family and dogs, our passion for travel and cooking, being Jewish, and our ambitions. October 2019 Fast forward almost two years (and 3 different apartments for Kayla) and we were inseparable. We did everything together from cooking, gardening, dreaming about travel, visiting our families, and becoming part of each others friend groups. Finally, after Kayla’s lease was up, we moved in together. Medical school was almost over for Cody, and Kayla was just about to start her MBA at Tulane. Now that we lived together we knew we needed to plan for our future. November 2019 - June 2021 The pandemic happened. Our first big international vacation together had to be canceled. Kayla finished graduate school via Zoom. Cody graduated medical school via Zoom. And we learned that we were officially going to move to Chicago for Cody’s anesthesia residency. This big move was so exciting and a little scary. But, we knew that no matter what we would be happy because we were doing it together. After a collective 18 years in New Orleans, we packed up everything (even all the plants!) and made the long drive. July 2021 - January 2022 Our lives in Chicago couldn’t be better. Despite the challenges of starting over in a new city, we have been by each others side (as much as residency allows) supporting each other through every step. We finally got to take that trip to Greece (plus many more) and determined that much like in life, we are perfect travel partners. Kayla plans the activities and Cody plans the meals, and all that matters is that we are together. February 2022 On a freezing February night, nearly 4 years to the day we met, we went out to dinner at a new restaurant and then went to see Come From Away. It was the perfect night filled activities we both love. Despite the freezing temperatures, Cody suggested that we walk the 10 minutes home from the theater. On the beautiful Clark Street Bridge overlooking all of downtown Chicago, Cody proposed. Kayla obviously said yes before he could even finish his whole speech. It was perfect.
