If you ask Kayla, we met through volleyball. If you ask Krys, we met at a bar. Both are technically true, but of course we both think we’re right. However it happened, we met, we fell in love, and now we’re getting married. So, why does Kayla claim we met through volleyball? We both grew up playing volleyball and continued playing at the club level through college — Kayla at UConn and Krys at Rutgers. Kayla’s high school coach, Jamie, happened to also be Krys’s college coach, so Kayla would go say “hi” to Jamie when UConn and Rutgers played at the same tournaments. Because of that, Kayla became familiar with some of the faces of the Rutgers men’s volleyball team. And why does Krys say we met at a bar? One day in June 2018, Krys and Kayla both ended up at the same bar in Jersey City. Krys and his Hoboken roommates went to see their high school friend’s band perform at a bar — they all grew up in Hillsborough. Kayla lived in Hoboken with her friend Christine (who also happened to be from Hillsborough) and they went to a bar with Christine’s sister and friends to see their friend’s band play. While listening to live music and drinking a beer, Kayla noticed a tall guy (did you know Krys is 6’8”?) who looked familiar. Kayla started chatting with Krys about their shared volleyball background and how she hoped to join a league now that she lived in Hoboken. They exchanged numbers, but didn’t keep in touch. Weeks (or maybe months?) later, Krys asked Kayla to join his intramural volleyball team with him and his roommates, Tommy and Brendan (our officiant!). We all started to become friendly, and eventually Krys asked Kayla on a date in early 2019 — she declined. After getting to know Krys more, she decided to give him a shot. For our first date in May 2019, we went to the library to rent books, Murray’s to buy cheese, and Central Park to spend the afternoon reading, eating, and chatting. From that day forward, we spent more and more time together. All this to say, although we formally met at a bar, we started dating because of volleyball, so Kayla is right. Now, seven years later, we’ve created a beautiful life together in Jersey City and are excited for this next chapter. We can’t wait to celebrate with you all in September!
