Beautiful metropark near our venue. I believe it is $10 for a daily pass. If you want to see some water and not travel far, this is the place to go! You can picnic, bike, walk, hike on the trails, rent canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards, or just lounge on the beach areas near the water. There is also a 50 foot water slide for kids to go down for a fee. Rent out a tee time 10 days in advance or bring a basketball or volleyball to play on the courts. Check out their website on metroparks.com.
Beautiful views of the Detroit skyline and Winsdor, Canada across the river. You can also view Ambassador Bridge. This is our favorite free activity to recommend to out of town guests because you get to see Canada, walk or bike, and there are multiple restaurants, bars, parks, and a fountain and carousel for kids. You can also go on boat tours, rent boats, rent jet skis, or rent canoe/kayak tours to use on the Detroit river if booked in advance. Check out the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy's website for a map and more recommendations.
Such a beautiful isle in between Detroit and Canada. This is another free activity I recommend to guests out of town especially if you are already in the Detroit area. You can walk or ride your bike down here from Detroit (recommended if it is crowded with letting cars onto the isle). There is a beautiful fountain with the closest views of Canada, beach/sand areas you can picnic at with Detroit skyline views, parks, food trucks in the middle, an aquarium, a conservatory, and just a great area to drive around/walk around. It can get crowded on beautiful weekend summer days so plan in advance.
How can you think of Detroit and not think about Henry Ford? Exactly! This museum is an "internationally recognized cultural destination" a national historic landmark. There are four venues: Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation, Greenfield Village, Ford Rouge Factory Tour, and the Benson Ford Research Center. Great place for learning more about the innovations that helped shape America. I recommend buying tickets in advance. This is also in the historic city of Dearborn.
Famous Michigan Avenue is near where we live! If you're around the area for the Henry Ford experience or just want to try some good middle eastern food, I recommend starting down Michigan Avenue and going through the historic cities of Dearborn and Dearborn Heights. You can find all types of food but what is unique here are the authentic middle eastern restaurants and Arabic food. (Don't be surprised if you see whole streets or restaurants in Arabic too!) Michigan Avenue runs about 2,500 miles long and was the first official connector to Chicago in the 1800's. Let me know if you want some food recommendations around here. Some middle eastern restaurants I have tried at the top of head are Hamido, Sheeba, and Al Ameer. You can also visit the Eastern Market in downtown Dearborn Heights for a indoor/outdoor vendor market experience. The downtown areas are very cute to walk around as well and there are tons of cute coffee shops, such as Haraz, a modern take on American and Turkish coffee.
