our story

from bumble to paragraphs to amtrak rides to marriage...

The fateful first message, October 2021: "who won the staring contest? you or cow?” Pretty soon after matching, our texts turned into novels. We were sending each other five paragraph essays daily before we even met. Gross, but also so cute. A couple weeks later, we met outside Mimi’s piano bar in the pouring rain. Ethan came all the way to the east side wearing a white button down. He waited outside for Kat, who was fifteen minutes late traveling from two blocks away. We had planned on dinner, but we were both too nervous to eat, so we ended up sharing a “salad”- this plate of full leaves of lettuce with shreds of mozzarella and tomatoes. Somehow, our texts got longer. We spent the next little while traipsing around New York every Saturday- running in five degree weather, setting one foot on Staten Island, falling asleep to old movies, and honing our skills as chefs in Kat’s tiny midtown kitchen. Ethan did the dishes, and Kat listened to his history lectures, and we fell in love. When Kat moved to Brooklyn, the heart emojis started. We got a little taste of distance and started our nightly FaceTimes. Or we’d get together at Ethan’s place and make grilled cheeses, and matzah from scratch. Ethan finally made Kat watch all the Star Wars movies, and Kat taught Ethan to love a hot cup of malina tea. Since Ethan moved to DC, we've been traveling to see each other and together everywhere else every chance we get. In New York, we cozy up at Kat's or go for long walks. In DC, Ethan plans sweet days and nights out. And in between, those virtual Wednesday date nights that we keep running out of ideas for. Now, we have each other on FaceTime always. And you know, it’s actually happened- the distance has made our hearts grow fonder. Super super fond. This past March, we planned a picnic. For a salad we thought we’d throw it back and toss together lettuce, shreds of mozzarella, and tomatoes. Alas, on the day of our picnic it was pouring rain. We packed our basket anyway and served ourselves on paper plates in the living room (so Ethan wouldn’t have to do the dishes, because Kat certainly wouldn’t). The ring was in the lettuce. <3
