We suggest getting a car! It really is not hard to get around and drive out in the country side, its basically the same as driving in the US! (No the driver seat is not on the opposite side of the car, and no you don't drive on the other side of the road). Plus, public transportation is limited outside the cities and Ubers aren't cheap. Tips for renting a car: GPS: Make sure you pay for the GPS upgrade, your phone GPS won't work well on Italian roads and maps. Use the WYZE app if you try to use your phone or for walking purposes. ZTL (Zones of Limitation): These are areas, mainly in the cities that normal people can't just drive into. HUGE fines if you do. Our suggestion is to drive to a nearby metro, park in paid parking (this is cheap for day parking), and take the metro into cities.
We got ours at AAA. You're able to just walk in with an up to date license and passport and it only took about 30 minutes. Cost: ~35$
