After a hesitant plunge into app dating, Katie and Shawn luckily landed in each other's frame of view. They felt an immediate connection and began writing back and forth like modern day pen pals. Katie learned about Shawn's unique experience as a sculptor in the Bay Area, about his family, his affinity for elaborate projects (especially his van), and their shared love of music, animals, the arts, and ramen. Shawn learned about Katie's multifaceted work as an actor, about her family, and her skills in the kitchen and behind a microphone. They decided to meet in Berkeley at a place called Heirloom Cafe (where an escape would be easy enough if either person proved to be a creep). Katie, waiting discretely in the car, spotted the man who had to be Shawn. He pulled up in his trusty Toyota pick up, hopped out and brushed off his shirt, then ran across the street. Katie collected herself and shuffled over to greet Shawn in the doorway. With wide smiles they nervously said hello and went for a hand shake instead of a hug. They sat down with their coffees and picked up where their written conversation had left off. Before they knew it, they'd been talking and laughing for hours. To keep a long story short, they quickly realized that they belonged together. 6 years later, they can say with confidence that they make each other's lives brighter, funnier, weirder, and happier every single day.
