Where are you taking us and why?
So what is the Ardèche? Well, it’s the Parc naturel régional des mont d’ardèche. Duh. Which I’m pretty sure means Regional Natural Park of Mount Ardèche. Or something like that. Basically, it’s a really natural, pretty place with Mountains, streams, caves, and largely unspoiled lands. The area is dotted with Medieval castles, and cathedrals that are protected from new development, and Privas, the nearest “big city”, (population 8,266 or 3.5x Pottsboro, TX) was besieged and ultimately destroyed by Louis the XIII at the end of the Huguenot Rebellion in 1629. Additionally, some of the world’s oldest remaining cave paintings are in the Ardèche at the Chauvet Pont d’Arc. To us this meant a beautiful location, steeped in history, packed with opportunities for hiking, cycling, kayaking, and secluded from big tourist gatherings. It’s the France you need a good excuse to visit, and now you have one.
