Roce Schedule of Events

The Wedding Website of Katie Olson and Ratan Rego
Ratan was born in Mangalore, a port city in the Indian State of Karnataka. Katie and Ratan have decided to begin their wedding weekend by holding a traditional Mangalorean Roce. This Catholic ceremony signifies a shift from single to married life, as well as a washing away of sins and purifying the soul for marriage using coconut oil and milk. Being from a coastal region, the abundant coconut has become an integral part of Mangalorean culture - from curries and desserts, to playing a symbolic role in celebrations. Use of the coconut in the pre-wedding ceremony shows our dependence on our Creator and Mother Nature. Similarly, in Biblical times, oil was used to anoint the kings and leaders to bless them. Therefore, oil is symbolically applied to the bride and groom as a sign of blessing and strengthening the marriage.

Roce Blessing

6:15 pm

The family members, beginning with the mother, apply the oil and roce on the bride or groom. This is often followed by the father, grandparents, siblings, close relatives, and then guests. - To start she dabs her thumb in the oil and makes a sign of the cross on the forehead of the groom/bride. - She takes a spoonful of oil and pours it on each of the ears. This is so that the bride and groom have a clear ear to listen to each other and understand each other. - She pours 5 drops of oil on the bride/groom's head and rubs oil into their hair. - She then takes coconut milk and applies it to the bride/groom. She does this by cupping her hands, scooping roce from the bowl and, pouring it on their head. She then applies more roce on the face, hands, and legs.
