Puerto Escondido is a small beach town located in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. It's famous for its big waves and is referred to as the Mexican Pipeline. Upon your arrival expect great food, yummy drinks, and lots of culture. Look forward to experiencing authentic Mexico as we have enjoyed doing over our years together. Get ready to be adventurous, Puerto Escondido is not a “resort town”, you will not find an all inclusive experience here. If you're reading this, you are invited to enjoy the WHOLE trip with us! Please join us for the welcome dinner and beach day activities leading up to the wedding! Arrive by the morning of the 6th to catch all of the fun.
Oaxaca is located in the southernmost region of mainland Mexico, so you will need to fly! Flying in and out of Puerto Escondido is pretty simple and there is no shortage of beautiful places to stay when you get there! See our travel & lodging tab for more info!
At a minimum, you will of course need your passport, pesos, and an adventurous spirit! Puerto Escondido is a tropical beach town, so sunscreen and bug spray will make your stay much more comfortable. If you are mosquito prone like Mike, you will be attacked as soon as you get off of the plane. The temperature rarely dips below 80 so plan to dress comfortably. Occasionally, tropical rain showers make an appearance. If you plan on renting a scooter or surf boards, most businesses will ask for a form of ID as collateral so bring an ID in addition to your passport. Bonus if you still have an old expired drivers license!
For those of us used to traveling to Baja and spending our American currency, it's worth noting that U.S. Dollars are nearly useless is Oaxaca. You will need to arrive with at least enough pesos to pay for your taxi from the airport and other incidentals. Most establishments accept "tarjeta" (credit cards), but its always good to have some emergency "efectivo" (cash) on hand. There are several ATMs available in Puerto Escondido, and currency conversion services are available at the Tijuana airport, but you can save yourself some ATM and foreign transaction fees by pulling out pesos at home. Several banks in the US offer the ability to order Pesos to be withdrawn from your account or currency conversion services. 3000 pesos (roughly $150 USD) should get you through most of your cash needs for your stay in Puerto Escondido.
Yes, you will need to bring your passport and will need to fill out an FMM (travel visa). The FMM form can be filled out in person at the airport or located online at: https://www.inm.gob.mx/fmme/publico/en/solicitud.html NOTE: if you are traveling via the CBX port of entry in San Diego to catch a flight out of TJ, you MUST select the "by land" option for "means of entry" and "Conexion peatonal aeropuerto Tijuana - San Diego." for "point of entry". If your passport has expired or is about to expire, now would be the time to renew it! Renewal can sometimes take months. If all else fails, there is an emergency renewal option available for people who have submitted a renewal form and have not received their passport. This option is available if you have not received your passport within 72 hours of your departure date.
Yes! You don't need to go buy rosetta stone, however it would help you to have a few basics under your belt such as how to order a taxi, or order basic food or drinks.
Yes! We would not be bringing our favorite people on a vacation to a dangerous destination. Oaxaca's crime rates are consistently lower than the rest of Mexico, and Puerto Escondido is a very safe, sleepy beach town. With that being said, nowhere is perfect. Please use the same common sense you would use back home in the states on a night out and you will be fine!
