We met during our first week of college in Virginia after moving there from Wisconsin and West Virginia in August 2012. Katie remembers walking to her biology class when Keaghan, someone she had just briefly met at a party the night before, exited a building and picked up his pace to perfectly align with Katie’s path. We chatted for a couple of minutes, Katie was very impressed to discover that Keaghan was studying Latin, and we parted ways. For the rest of the semester, Keaghan often got to his science class early (the only class in his college career he was ever early to) because Katie had a class in the same room right before his. We were both excited to say “hi” and smile as we passed in the hallway twice a week. We attended some date functions together, and Katie hung out in Keaghan’s dorm room common area because “it was a good place to study”. At the end of our sophomore year, we decided to travel together to Barcelona, Rome, and Dublin after studying abroad independently. Through many ups (seeing Papa Francesco, riding bikes through Barcelona) and downs (getting our passports and Katie’s purse stolen, Keaghan losing his phone in a cab), we figured we could probably get through anything and decided to date shortly thereafter. Since then, we have enjoyed many adventures together, including traveling, hiking, and adopting our dog Kaiya.
At the beginning of the pandemic, Keaghan (with Katie’s assistance!) fixed up a boat that had been on the Balistreri’s property for many years. Once it was able to float and had a new coat of paint, we began enjoying many trips on the Milwaukee river together. Keaghan decided it would be the perfect place to ask Katie to marry him. On a lovely fall day and after finishing some chicken fingers and french fries, Keaghan proposed. Even though he was wearing his crocs… she said ‘yes!’.
