We get it! You can either be excited or bummed about a destination wedding. It was a very hard decision for us. One of the many things that has bound our love and appreciation for one another is our desire to explore and create new experiences. Our love for travel has brought us many new friendships and memories along our journey as one. We could not think of a better way to express our love for one another on our wedding day than by creating a completely new experience for us on our quest as one. We actually came to Barcelo Maya on our first vacation out of the country together in 2018! We are honored, privileged and blessed to share this moment with all of our friends, family, and loved ones. But we want you to know if you can make it out, we're beyond grateful and can't wait to celebrate with you! BUT if you can't, we completely understand why! We promise, no hard feelings!
I'm sure this will change by the time of the wedding but this is the current protocol for COVID if you are curious. We are asking that all guests are fully vaccinated. At this time the US requires a negative NAAT or Antigen test within three days prior to your departure of Mexico and returning home. These are provided at the resort for $14.00 and can be scheduled at check in. You can download the app VeriFLY and fill it out with your Covid results to help expedite the airport process at departure. Then look for the line that says VeriFLY. It will make the process go much quicker. At the resort staff are wearing masks. Guests are required to wear masks in closed places and restaurants. Temperature checks are done at arrival and at breakfast.

You will be flying into the Cancun Airport and need a shuttle/taxi to Barceló Maya Palace in Riviera Maya. Side note: When coming out of the Cancun airport every single person will try to get you to take their taxi or sell you something. Just continue to the doors to lead you outside and search for your name or whatever your taxi/shuttle told you to look for. You will most likely have a short wait. Grab a beer and relax. BUT DO NOT LEAVE YOUR ITEMS UNATTENDED. The ride to the resort is about 45 minutes.
YES! ALL guests require a passport to enter Mexico. Since this is an international trip, you do need a passport valid AT LEAST 6+ MONTHS PAST YOUR TRAVEL DATES. If you have a passport, be sure to check the expiration date. Processing times for passport applications and renewals can take up to a few months (Due to COVID), so don't wait! Renew/Apply ASAP. Visit https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports.html for more information.
The dress code is Beach Chic! Please dress according to the code. Examples of what to wear for the ladies: formal maxi dress, sun dress, cocktail dress, etc. Examples of what to wear for men: Short Sleeve Button Ups, Camp Shirts, Resort Shorts, Linen, Khaki Shorts
We are having an “unplugged ceremony” meaning during the ceremony please turn off all cell phones, cameras, and other devices. We want you to enjoy this special moment with us (and let our photographer get our dream photos)! However, please feel free to use them at the cocktail hour and reception.
Men must wear long pants to the specialty restaurants! Women must also dress nice for the specialty restaurants (no jean shorts etc.) You can wear whatever to the buffets as long as you aren't in your swimsuit. Men can wear their swim trunks with a t shirt and females are good to wear a cover-up as long as it's not open in the front.
It's the dry season. The average high’s around 87°, possibly only dropping to 72° at night. The moderate winds from the sea brings welcome refreshment. The water temperature is a brilliant 87°. Rain’s not much to worry about in the Riviera Maya in April!
Enough Sunscreen for your entire stay (it's very overpriced on the resort), bug spray, and tylenol. You may also want to bring a damp rid bag for your room as sometimes the smell made from the humidity from the jungle environment bothers people. You may also want to bring a snorkel if you plan on going out in front of the Palace to swim with turtles! Don't worry about bringing beach towels. The resort providers them!
Limit liquids, gels, aerosols, and pastes items to a maximum of 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters for carry-on bags. Anything over those limits need to be put in your checked bag (best all together in a bag). Portable electronic devices (i.e. cameras, cellular phones, laptop computers and camcorders) are allowed when transported in carry-on baggage. Pack spare batteries in carry-on baggage. Other personal items like cologne or hairspray are allowed in checked baggage, as long as there is less than 16 ounces of each item and less than 70 ounces total. Alcohol or liquor is permitted if it’s in your checked baggage or purchased after the security checkpoint for your carry-on, as long as it meets carry-on guidelines and the following: Alcohol content may not exceed 140 proof. Up to 5 liters of alcohol per person. Alcohol must be in its original unopened retail packaging to be permitted onboard the plane.
You will go through the 1st part of customs with papers you fill out on the plane. (SO BRING A PEN ON THE PLANE AND HAVE YOUR PASSPORT HANDY ON THE PLANE). Then you will get your luggage and then you will go to the 2nd part of customs with your luggage (sometimes they will stop you sometimes not, it's all random). Finally you will go thru the airport to the outside to find your transportation company. WHATEVER YOU DO KEEP WALKING! People will try and sell you stuff left and right...just keep going and say no thank you and find your transportation.
Yes, many resorts, tours, and stores take both USD and pesos, but be sure to prepare your credit and debit cards. Call your bank and let them know the dates you will be gone. Charges made at the resort or elsewhere on your trip may be subject to a foreign transaction fee by your bank (normally 1-3%). The local currency is the Mexican peso, although US dollars are easy to exchange should you wish to take foreign currency with you. There is an ATM on site that will give out pesos. Pesos rate changes daily. $1 USD could be equivalent to 19 pesos one day and 15 pesos the next.
Depends on your carrier. You should be able to check your plan to see if Mexico is covered in your plan. Or you may be able to add it for a daily fee. Make sure you ask your carrier how to set this up so you're not stuck in Mexico without it if you plan on using it. You may also purchase a wifi plan at Barcelo for $12 a day or there are some free wifi areas around the resort. I highly recommend screenshotting the map of Barcelo and other important information so you have it even if you do not have service. Side note: Each room does have a safe but it is not big enough for a laptop so try not to bring alot of valuables. We do recommend locking everything up.
Yes, please make your request early so we can ensure your meal is correct for the reception. At check in you can tell then you have a certain diet/food allergy and they will print a card for you to take to the restaurants. We want you to enjoy the week as much as we will without having to worry about what you can and can't eat!
Tipping the bartenders, housekeepers, waiters, is appreciated but not necessary. If you tip you may get more alcohol in your drinks, quicker service, and more snacks in your room.
There are 11 restaurants in total at Barcelo Maya Grand Resort. Guests receive a set # of vouchers to book a la carte dinners as followers: 3 nights one voucher, 4-5 nights two vouchers, and Premium Level guests have unlimited vouchers. Guests staying at Palace (you guys) have access to all 11 restaurants. You will receive your dinner vouchers when you check in. You must book your specialty dinners in person at guest services located in each lobby. I highly recommend you book them the moment you check in to ensure you get all the restaurants you want at a time that is convenient for you. Guest services desks are also located on the ground floor of each room building. Dress code to access the a la carte restaurants: Men 13 and older must wear long pants and closed-toed shoes.
