Our Story
In 2020, as the pandemic swept across the world and everything shut down, Katie was living in Truckee, craving fresh air and a sense of freedom. Like many others searching for an escape, she turned to the outdoors. That’s when she found herself kayaking on the South Fork of the American River in Coloma.
It was on the upper section known as Chili Bar, in an eddy above Racehorse Bend, that she met Javier. They spent the day paddling together and by the end of it, discovered they lived just two streets apart back in Truckee.
Their friendship quickly took root as they continued kayaking through the uncertainty of the pandemic—long days on the river turning into something deeper. Just a month after they met, Katie invited Javi on a 12-day river trip in Idaho, down the Middle Fork and Main Salmon rivers.
The water was high, they were the only kayakers, and somewhere along the way, they fell in love.
