Peter and Katherine met in their first year of law school through mutual friends at a trivia night at Durham’s Fullsteam Brewery. Although Katherine heard positive things about Peter through this group of friends, who seemed genuinely pleased that he’d be joining for the evening despite his questionable knowledge of trivia, she was not initially impressed with him. A lifelong southerner despite her notions to the contrary, she found Peter to be stereotypically “Connecticut”--quiet, snobby, and tragically unaware of how flashy his Fendi eyeglasses were. It gets worse; Peter does not remember Katherine from that evening, or indeed, from the first year of law school at all. Needless to say, it was not love (or even like) at first sight.
Despite these inauspicious beginnings, they became friends starting in the second year of law school, bonding over Peter’s tales of his mishaps during the law school job interview season (close your briefcase before picking it up, kids, or better yet, don’t use a briefcase at all). At some point, Katherine learned the truth about Peter’s glasses—they were actually knockoffs that he had ordered through a sketchy Chinese website, completely unaware at the time that Fendi existed (Katherine: and unaware that they were hideous). With this major obstacle out of the way, the path was cleared for the future couple to build on their friendship in the fall of their third year of law school. When Katherine invited several friends to climb North Carolina’s Pilot Mountain on a sweltering September day, Peter was the only one stupid enough to accept. The excursion was followed by a handful of particularly odd outings—including an Elvis impersonator concert and a trip to the North Carolina state fair that involved pig racing, a child’s haunted house ride, and an extensive tour of the Smokey the Bear exhibit and farm machinery museum—each of which strangely seemed to encourage rather than hinder their relationship. Peter finally asked Katherine on their first date on the day before Halloween of 3L year, which included hiking at Hanging Rock State Park, pumpkin carving, and takeout falafels. Although Katherine had to confirm by text message after-the-fact that it was indeed a date, her suspicions were luckily accurate. They’ve come a long way from initial apathy/antipathy to collaborating on an online relationship synopsis inexplicably written in the third person, and they can’t wait to celebrate with their loved ones in a few months!
