We both worked as camp counselors for the 92nd Street Y (Camp Yomi) during summer 2008. We bonded over our mutual dislike of the job. It became almost a tradition for us to start our morning by chatting in the morning meeting area. We regularly walked home together, as we only lived 10 blocks apart, and we spent a lot of evenings AIMing (does anyone remember this?!?) Unfortunately, neither of us were brave enough to reveal our feelings for the other one, so camp ended without anything unfolding. We lost touch for the next 7 years until we were brought back together.
Flashforward 7 years later--both of us had signed up for OKCupid accounts hoping to find someone. Little did we know, we had already found the perfect person. One day, Metin came across Katherine's photograph while scrolling through potential matches. He reached out, and Katherine was surprised to see someone she actually knew (and remembered liking). After a few weeks of messaging on OKCupid and then sharing numbers and texting, we decided to go on our first date.
Metin took Katherine to Friedman's downtown for brunch for their first date. After brunch, we didn't want to leave each other yet, so we walked the entire length of the High Line. By the end of it, we both knew we had found something special.
After three and a half years of being together, sharing an apartment, and becoming a part of each other's circle of friends and family, we decided to get married! Metin planned a proposal centered around Katherine's favorite movie, "Serendipity." Unfortunately, life doesn't usually go according to plan...that morning we woke up to find out that the city had decided to turn off the water in our neighborhood. We ran to Katherine's mother's house to shower, and Metin's prompt noon proposal at Wollman Rink (where much of Serendipity takes place) got changed to a 2:00 proposal that he had to figure out where to stage as Wollman Rink had become too crowded. He decided on the Dairy Visitor Center, as it's beautiful and has a view of the rink. We had a sense of humor about the whole thing, and Katherine was moved by the fact that Metin got the exact edition of "Love in the Time of Cholera" from the movie as part of his proposal. We're excited to start the next chapter in our life together, and we're so glad you will be a part of it!
