Layton and Katie both found themselves in NYC via different paths. One, perfectly orchestrated many of their life decisions from a young age to get there, and the other took an oppurutnity because 'it sounded cool' (surely, you know who is who). However, neither had one another in their 5-year plan when they both decided to try out app-dating in November 2019. They matched, and squeezed in their first date on a Monday night before their respective Thanksgiving trips (him home to Salina and her to Spain with her sisters and close friend) at The Mermaid Inn in West Village. Katie almost cancelled due to a hangover, Layton needed a root canal and was in pain, but they both had what was their last first date, and since then the two have been inseperable.
Layton loves the Chiefs (EVERYONE knows this) and Katie is a pretty big sports fan, so it was a no brainer when she found decent flights and tickets to go to the Divisional game in Jan. 2020 back in Kansas City, that they were going to go. The weather looked clear and the plan was in motion. Well, the weather in the Midwest had a mind of it's own and an unsuspected ice storm rolled through grounding their connecting flight from Chicago to Kansas City the day before kickoff. Layton gave up, said to cancel, sell the tickets and that they should stay home to watch it back in NYC, but Katie wouldn't take no for an answer and drug him to the airport to at least get to Chicago and figure it out. In her mind, she was getting there no matter what! Once in Chicago, they had hoped to find a standby flight to take, but unfortunately the storm got worst and all flights out of Chicago to KC and neighboring airports were grounded, so she pivoted, rented an SUV and the two were on their way. The 6 hour drive turned into 10, neither had proper clothing or footwear for subzero weather, and within the first 6 minutes of kickoff the Chiefs were down 24-0 to Houston. She felt terrible - "why did I drag this guy across the country, through the snow, for this," she thought. Ultimately, the Chiefs won, and continued to win to become Super Bowl Champs in 2020, and now Katie and Layton no longer need to fly to see games - living 15 minutes from the stadium and being season ticket holders they'll hopefully get to see many more Ws.
Katie and Layton had just got back from Kansas City celebrating Layton's birthday, and she knew he picked up the ring but did not tell him. It was one of their last Sundays in NYC and Katie wanted to go check out the restaurant where she was having her 30th birthday and then go walk around the MOMA. The two got ready, Katie taking extra care to look super nice just in case she would be getting photographed while noticing Layton put on long pants and a collared shirt (HE MUST BE PRPOSING, RIGHT?). They drove into the city, had a nice brunch, checked out the bar and space, and drove to the Upper East Side for the Moma. The two were exhausted and Katie wanted to go home, testing Layton to see if he was going to propose, and he finally said "we can go home if you want." Katie figured well today isn't the day and the two walked around the museum, but when they stopped to get a drink on the roof it was already closed for the day. They decided to leave and Layton forced Katie in heels to stroll around Central Park - she was miserable in uncomfortable heels, but did so because she knew he was trying to make her happy in her last days as a New Yorker. They got back to outside the MOMA and the two sat by the fountains, he got down on one knee, and surprised her with the greatest question. No photographer, no street artist, no crowd, just the two of them in her favorite city where they met. The celebrated with cocktails, wine, food at Estela, her favorite restaurant, and went to work the next day as The Future Mr. and Mrs. Everhart.
