How We Met

March 13, 2013

Kate & Travis first started chatting on a dating app in early 2013. They were both intimidated by the other on paper, but were too intrigued not to give it a try. Travis was into Kate's 'yoga arms' and interest in history, and Kate appreciated Travis' quick wit and thoughtful responses. They met at The Coupe in Columbia Heights for their first date, and Travis impressed Kate by running to meet her after underestimating the parking situation in DC. They intended to just meet for quick drinks, but instead talked for five hours, about everything from current events to pop culture and military history; they shared a large order of short rib poutine and closed the place down. Kate was sure for the next month that she had conjured Travis out of thin air. Travis braved driving all over the DMV several times a week to visit her, and they fell in love exploring all DC has to offer, especially new restaurants and bookstores.

The Proposal(s)

November 11, 2018 & December 23, 2018

Kate has loved Historic Williamsburg, VA for as long as she can remember; it was a frequent stop on her family's annual summer vacations to Myrtle Beach, SC, and she's always found it peaceful with something new to learn each visit. Travis had been searching for a ring and thinking about where best to propose since February 2018. In October, he had the perfect ring picked out, and just needed a place. He strategically but casually suggested they go to Williamsburg over Veterans Day weekend 2018, since as a veteran he had free admission. He also noted he'd been meaning to visit again to learn to appreciate its beauty and history better. Kate found this exceedingly practical and thoughtful, but suspected nothing. After a perfect visit to Jamestown and the Williamsburg Winery on Saturday, Travis and Kate spent Sunday Nov 11, 2018 exploring the historic area. When they came to the Governor's Palace, Kate suggested they go around to the back garden, which is often overlooked and secluded. The late afternoon winter golden hour arrived and the timing was perfect. Travis said "you can really sense the rich history here, but you know what, it lacks something," turned to Kate, got down on one knee, and said "will you help me add a piece of our personal history to this place"? Kate melted, giggled and of course said yes! They promptly celebrated with great food and a trip to Barnes & Noble. Kate, not to be outdone, plotted her own proposal to Travis. While in New England for the December holidays, they toured another piece of (military) history- the USS Massachusetts, a WWII era battleship. Kate had ordered a custom engagement ring for Travis made of rifle stock from the barrel of a WWI rifle, and luckily it arrived the day before they left for their trip! Travis said 'yes' in return, and sealed the deal on the bow of the Massachusetts. We feel so fortunate that our love story is intertwined with these spots!
