Small medieval village at the centre of what is the most recognised wine region in the Southern Rhône. Sitting atop the hill that the town is built on are the remnants of a castle built by the second of the Avignon popes and offers great views of the surrounding area and the Rhône river.
Every Sunday, this village has what we think is the best market in the region. This one is really worth the visit! Give yourself plenty of time as the market as it spans across the entire village. Also consider visiting the nearby Fontaine-de-Vaucluse while you're there.
Avignon is a walled medieval city most famous for being the home to seven popes during the 14th century, and a well known song about the bridge. It is the largest city in the region, with many shops, hotels, and restaurants. Things to see: The Palais des Papes and Pont d'Avignon.
Our favourite little village in the area, along with the nearby villages of Sablet and Gigondas. A nice place to visit and walk around the town. Perched on a hillside in the foothills of Mont Ventoux with views of the surrounding area. Also a great place to buy wine! Visit the Maison des Vins et du Tourisme in Sablet, who sell wine from a few local producers in the nearby villages. Châteauneuf-du-Pape may be the most famous (and expensive) wine appellation in the region, but also look out for wine from Gigondas, Vacqueyras, or Côtes du Rhône Villages wine from Séguret and Sablet.
Kayaking on the Ardèche River, passing under the Pont d'Arc, a natural stone bridge. There are numerous places to rent kayaks from, each offering different lengths and difficulties and they will pick you up down river a few hours later. Great place for swimming and jumping off rocks. Bring a picnic lunch and stop halfway.
