Travel Documents Needed for the UK

For new AND experienced travelers, there is a new requirement for entry into the UK. All non-UK citizens need to apply for an ETA to travel. You can apply easily online and pay via credit, debit or apple pay. The cost is 10 pounds (around $13 USD). You can apply without knowing your travel plans, but you will need a valid passport to make the application. Once you receive the ETA, it is valid for two years. It takes around 3-5 business days to process / get your approval, but it is recommended to do this as early as possible. You MUST have the approval before you try and enter the UK. You will not be allowed to enter the country without it. Follow the link below to the gov.uk website to complete your application. Third party sites and services may be available to complete this process, but it is easiest to make sure you are at the source.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Planes There are two airports we recommend traveling through. London Heathrow (LHR): this is perfect for those wanting to spend some time in London either before or after the wedding. The train from London to Sheffield takes around two hours. See the "Travel within London" section for more details. Manchester(MAN): Close to Sheffield for quick travel, you can get a train directly from the airport to Sheffield, with one change at Manchester City Centre. The journey takes around 45 minutes. TRAINS It's very easy to travel by train in the UK. As well as transport to and from the airports, it's also a comfortable and inexpensive way to do some sightseeing! From Sheffield; London, York, Edinburgh, the Lake District and Cotswolds are all easily accessible by train. The Trainline app or website (Linked Below) is the best way to book. Booking in advance gets you the best prices & options to upgrade to first class deals (first class perks vary, but typically includes bigger seats and free food & drinks, served on the trolley...yes, like Harry Potter. Sadly, no Chocolate Frogs. AUTOMOBILES Similarly, the cars do not fly, but if you're staying for a while and exploring, you may want to rent one anyway. A US license can be used to hire a car in the UK, but it is strongly recommended to study the differences in traffic laws extensively before doing so. Driving on the wrong side of the road isn't the only difference. There are great villages, local pubs, and hikes that would be hard to access without a car (although it's possible via busses). See "Things to Do" for more details. If you're spending time in London, driving is not recommended! You can get anywhere via the Underground or with the classic black cab. Driving is restricted, expensive and difficult within London.
