Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the closest and biggest airport to Athens. There will be tons of flights to choose from! You can then rent a car or take a shuttle to get to Athens from there. It's about an hour and a half drive. Hartsfield-Jackson is one of the busiest airports in the world, so be ready to take the Plane Train!
Flight
Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport is another airport option. It's a much smaller airport, so finding flights may be a little more difficult. It's about the same distance from Athens, though! If you can manage to fly in here, take it! Greenville is a cute city and the drive to Athens is a quiet hour and a half. You'll be able to rent cars at the airport.

For all our Virginia/Maryland based family: Macon has a small airport (MCN) with direct roundtrip flights daily to and from BWI Airport to Macon via Contour Airlines. Flights are very cheap and arriving in Macon means an hour and forty five minute drive to Athens. Gordon has flown this route before and highly recommends it!
