Our story truly is a love at first sight scenario. We never thought we could get that lucky, but we did, and oftentimes, it's still hard to believe how fortunate we are for meeting one another the way we did. While it’s possible we could have unknowingly crossed paths years before while spending time with our families on Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard since we were newborns, our paths crossed when we first met in June of 2013 while attending the Hog Island Audubon Camp in Bremen, Maine. We both received scholarships from our local Audubon societies in Maine and Pennsylvania to attend the Coastal Maine Studies for Teens Camp, and while Katama only had a short drive South down the coast from her home in Downeast Maine, Nathaniel and two close birding friends made the longer 8-hour drive Northeast from Pennsylvania. Over the course of our week at camp, we made good friends who were attending camp from all over the country, learned from world renowned scientists, authors, and educators, sat in handmade wooden blinds watching over Atlantic Puffins on one of their remote nesting islands, and explored the stunning sights of Hog Island and the surrounding waters of Muscongus Bay. No memory, however, compared to the moment we met on the very first day as sixteen year olds, and the time we spent getting to know one another as shy nature enthusiasts. We both recall the moment we first saw each other, and knew from that point that our lives were meant to collide. While we were perhaps on polar opposites of the bird-obsessed scale among our fellow campers, we felt an immediate connection. After only a week at camp, we knew we’d have to see each other again. Since that first day, we have grown together and been there for each other across the times, distances, challenges, celebrations, milestones, and changes of life. From those first years of a long-distance relationship in high school, to living in neighboring states during college, traveling via bus, train, plane, and automobile across the Northeast to see each other, and living part time in the Midwest, we are thrilled to now be living together on the Maine coast, not far from where we met. The 11 years we’ve spent together have been full of wonderful memories, exciting adventures, and pure love for one another, no matter our physical distance. We’ve made the effort to celebrate our anniversary and return to the island most years, and have been incredibly fortunate to work on the island together for the past few summers with people of all ages, backgrounds, and interests. Through collaborative walks, workshops, and presentations, we’ve had the opportunity to merge our passions for nature-inspired art, ecology, and education as Family Camp instructors. Being able to pass on our love for art and nature to children and their families brings us immense joy, and we are truly grateful to the island, its plants and wildlife, and the people that make this place so special to us and so many others. Check out our "Photos Over the Years" page on the website to see the island's beauty for yourself, as well as memorable adventures we've had there and elsewhere throughout our journey together so far!
