Alex first saw Katherine on a destined flight from Philadelphia to Fort Lauderdale. Her seat was one up and over, and she was studying from an unrealistically large book. Then when the plane began to descend, she took out yet another book and began to read. Intrigued, he tapped her elbow, interrupted her reading, and began to talk to her. While deplaning, Alex and Katherine chatted about his work in Fort Lauderdale, where he was staying, where he should go for his birthday dinner later in the week, etc. Before they could exchange numbers, Katherine's dad surprised her at baggage claim, and they said their awkward goodbyes. After that, Katherine wasn't sure if she would ever connect with Alex again. So the next day, Katherine and her friend Andrea made a pit stop when on their way to the beach. They stopped at the hotel Alex said he would be staying at, just to see if he happened to be having breakfast before work. When they walk in to the lobby, Alex was the first person Katherine saw! They've been together ever since.

A week after meeting in 2012, Alex picked Katherine up from the Philadelphia airport, where he surprised her with their first kiss. Five years and 364 days later, Alex flew Katherine to Philadelphia under the premise of a family reunion. Instead, he proposed on that very spot!
