After much reflection - we agree that SF or "San Fran" as the locals call it ;), is a hard place for visitors to enjoy the full authentic experience if your hotel is located in a less than ideal area. We vehemently advise against staying in the Tenderloin, Financial District, and Civic Center, as these have varying levels of safety and are not recommended for an enjoyable stay. We reserved a room block at the Marriott in Fisherman's Wharf with a pre-negotiated rate of $219/night. If you'd rather grab an AirBnB or a boutique hotel, please see below for a breakdown of neighborhoods and adjacent streets within those neighborhoods that we recommend: - Russian Hill / Polk Street - where we've called home for 2.5 years now. - Marina / Chestnut street (the various motor inns on Lombard aren't necessarily a no-go - but book at your own risk) - Cow Hollow / Union Street - Pacific Heights / Fillmore Street - Nopa + Haight-Ashbury / Divisadero + Haight Street - Presidio
